In a world filed with overpriced and hyped eyewear, Tifosi has long been known for making quality, affordable sunglasses. We got in a pair of their new Swank XL (the extra-large version of their Swank models) in Blackout—black frames with smoke lenses. They offer shatterproof polycarbonate lenses with 100-percent UVA/UVB protection.
FOR THOSE WHO DON’T WEAR SUNGLASSES
One of our testers doesn’t wear sunglasses, because in addition to interfering with his photography, he claims that they are uncomfortable, fall off, and get scratched too easily to bother. None of these things were the case when he tried the Swanks, and he ended up wearing them more often than he ever thought possible! What he liked most was that they offered good eye protection and looked like everyday sunglasses without the “shield” look, which he finds silly. Weighing in at just 26 grams (that’s just under an ounce!), the Swanks are very light, and they stay in place on your face or on your hat or helmet very well.
The hinge is even designed to not snag your hair. The nose pads are made of hydrophilic rubber that increase the grip when you sweat, avoiding bouncing against your nose when you’re riding. They can be ordered with standard or prescription lenses, even with progressive lenses. They’re available in Blackout, Satin Vapor, Pink Tortoise or Blue Tortoise with specific-colored lenses, or you can go to their website’s custom lab to pick the colors you really want.
WHAT’S IN A PRICE?
We want to talk about the price here. Why, you wonder, are these so reasonable compared to other brands? You might compare these to the Oakley Holbrook XLs, which retail for $197. Are the Oakleys a better pair of sunglasses? Maybe, but could they be over six times better? We doubt it. Tifosi is still their own brand, and they produce a variety of sunglasses for men and women that are sport-specific. For both the price and performance, we really like these Swank XL glasses. The Swanks are available in six colorways, and a microfiber cleaning bag is included.
